Cultural Events Guidelines

All HISP students are required to attend three (3) cultural events per quarter and to submit written reports to their literature teachers each quarter. The following are some general guidelines for what constitutes a cultural event (for our purposes) and some suggestions for submitting the reports. Please direct any questions to your literature teacher. Thank you and get cultured!

Purpose of Attending Cultural Events

Attending cultural events exposes a person to the arts and to a variety of artistic expression found in most communities. Education cannot happen just at school -- it must go beyond the walls of the classroom. Watching a play being performed live is quite a different experience than reading a play from a book. We want each student to broaden his or her horizons and to take advantage of what our community and the surrounding communities have to offer. We hope that each student will try a number of different experiences and in that way, gain an important glimpse into life beyond McClatchy. You need not spend a fortune -- there are many low-cost or free events.  Check the HISP bulletin board on the 2nd floor for flyers, etc.

What Is A Cultural Event?

• Live performance of music, dance, drama, poetry recitation
• Visit to an art gallery or museum
• Sanctioned activities of the HISP Council (parents’ group),  e.g. after-school activities or evening arts performance
• Lectures which deal with the humanities

Events That Are Not Deemed Cultural Events?

• Films (Note this is a new policy 9/04)
• Listening to music on a tape, CD, etc.
• Street musicians playing at shopping malls, etc.
• Elementary or middle school performances
• TV shows pertaining to the arts
• Restaurants with ethnic food
• Church festivals (even if there is music involved)
• Shopping mall arts and crafts shows
• Art work displayed in a restaurant or business other than a gallery or museum

THE EMPHASIS IS ON THREE QUALITY EVENTS WHICH ARE CULTURAL AND “LIVE.”

What Do I Need To Write About?

1. In one paragraph, describe what you did (“I went to the Andy Warhol exhibit at the Crocker Art Museum.”) and when. Attach a ticket stub, program or brochure if possible.
2. Next, react to what you did. What did you think of the museum exhibit, play, dance, poetry? How did it make you feel? How did it relate to your studies, your life, your dreams and ambitions? We don’t mean tell us that you were tired or your feet hurt or there was an annoying person reading all the little signs at the museum – we mean react aesthetically or emotionally.  (Suggested length: one page per event. Preferably typed, double-spaced, but may be hand-written legibly.)

CHECK WITH YOUR LITERATURE TEACHER FOR DUE DATES AND SPECIFIC GRADING CRITERIA.

DISCLAIMER: Each literature teacher has the right to require specific criterion with regard to attendance at cultural events. What is standard and uniform among HISP classes is the number of events required: 3 per quarter. Always defer questions to your teacher.
