requirement. You are not limited to this list. Talk to your social
science teacher and consult the HISP bulletin board for additional
ideas!

Re-enactment Volunteers - The Old Sacramento Living History program provides an 1850's Gold Rush life demonstration program the last Sunday in each month from 10 am to 4 pm at Waterfront Park in Old Sacramento. Volunteers are needed to assist with set up of the tents and site, tear-down and general assistance during the time of the program. This is a great opportunity for students to earn service credit. McKinley Park Pond Cleanup Saturday, January 17, 2009
8:00AM - 12:00PM
Come down to McKinley Park to clean up the duck pond. Volunteers will be using rakes to remove debris from the edges of the duck pond and scrape debris from paved areas around pond with shovels. All equipment will be provided.
This is a rain or shine event. Volunteers must wear closed toed shoes and are encouraged to wear rain boots/shoes, bring a pair of heavy duty work gloves, and wear long sleeved shirts and long pants. Volunteers 8-13 are welcome to register with an adult. There is no maximum age requirement, so come out and make a difference!

Turning Point Community Program’s Health Fair at
The Health Fair is an annual event coordinated by Turning Point Community Programs, www.tpcp.org , held at the Walk for Mental Health www.walkformentalhealth.com in October each year. Free health screenings, educational outreach, with information about mental health programs, substance abuse, smoking cessation, physical wellness, and access to care will be presented. Multicultural performances and participation from diverse communities are planned. ( west steps of the Capitol ) |

Volunteers
are needed for the Annual 5K Heart Walk. The walk is on a Saturday in
September at the Village Green at William
Land Park . . Different Shifts are available. Opportunities range from setup, cleanup, manning aid
stations, registering teams, distributing goodie bags, . . .and more.

Pet Treats Drive The pet
treats collected will help offset the cost of caring for shelter
pets and other animals in need in the Sacramento community.

grant funds support the training of high school students at C.K.
McClatchy High School who will work in elementary and junior high
schools to prevent bullying, discrimination and violence

Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides a one-to-one friendship to boys
ages 8-15 and girls ages 7-15, primarily from single-parent homes.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a
valid drivers license and insured transportation, and reside within
our tri-county area. Bigs commit to spending anywhere from 1-6 hours
with a child either weekly or bi-weekly.

Tour and Tea at the Crocker
- On the first Thursday of the month, September through
June, the Crocker Art Museum holds a Tour and Tea program hosted and
led by its docents. Themes for the tea include:
Bountiful Harvest , and FootSteps Through Italy!. The program attracts between 25 and 40 people each
month.
What is the Service Opportunity? The museum is in need of volunteers to help with food prep, service,
and clean-up. This is a fun series to volunteer for, and you don't have
to commit to every tea.
When: Teas start at 1 pm, and help is needed from Noon to 3 pm.

Crocker Art Museum Teen Action Team – If you are between the ages of 13 and 17, join a group of your peers to actively create and plan activities for teens at the Crocker Art Museum and on-line as part of the Teen Action Team. WHAT: Tiny Tot Basketball
– volunteers are needed to help coach recreational basketball for
children in Kindergarten and 1 st Grade at the Oak Park Community
Center.
WHEN: The practices are
Thursdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm with games on Saturdays from
9 am to noon. Coaches are needed now through November 6.
WHERE: Oak Park Community Center

Global Youth Service/Earth Day - Saturday, April 19, 2009 from 8 am - Noon: Help preserve and beautify all 14 miles of Sacramento Northern Bike Trail in one morning. The clean up begins at Robla Park, 625 Bell Avenue (Bell Avenue and Taylor Street), Sacramento, CA 95838. Volunteers will help remove litter and invasive plants, prune shrubs, and weed or mulch garden beds. Volunteers need own transportation between the park and assigned section of bike trail, and volunteers under age 18 must bring along the Short-Term Volunteer Information and Agreement signed by a parent/guardian.
